My first introduction into fitness was more than 20 years ago when I did amateur boxing for fun and as way to stay out of trouble with all the extra energy I seemed to have as a youth. I became instantly hooked. The blood rushing through my system and the sound of my heart pounding in my ear, as my opponent stalked me from one side of the ring to the other, became a nightly craving. I spent years building a craft with my hands and speed with my feet. That speed was produced with ladder drills for agility, hours of jump roping for quickness and rhythm and the miles of running it takes to build the cardiovascular system needed.
I never new that running would become my future passion.
After spending years chasing promotion after promotion in retail America, I was re introduce to fitness via my wife who was running for charity with Team In Training at the time. After doing some training runs with my wife, I felt the high again and soon signed up for my first marathon. During my first marathon , at mile 18, I suddenly began feeling this excruciating pain in my right knee. It happened all of sudden and every step felt like there was someone knifing my knee. I went from running to a slow walk. Every inch from mile 18 was a struggle within myself, "do I stop, no, no, I got to finish". It was my first marathon and I wanted to complete it so bad and I did. After more than 2 hours of walking I finished, a face full of tears, knee, hip and back in agonizing pain.
The diagnosis, a torn meniscus in my right knee. Very common in under trained athletes. I went to PT, then hired a running coach. After a few months I was no better. I couldn't run further than a 5k without crying in pain. So I hired a different PT and another running coach. Same outcome. I needed to know why I wasn't getting any better and no one seemed to know the answers.
Needing to know more I began reading , studying and after 2 years of chasing lots of seminars and reading tons of health and fitness articles, I was taking my first personal training certification. I used my new knowledge to get healthy. Building on my mobility, stability and strength, I found myself able to run longer and faster than ever before. Hooked on all the science of fitness, I kept going deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole of learning as much as could, ultimately changing careers to help others get to their goals, without injury.
